Benalmádena
In the last 50 years Benalmádena has been a tremendously popular tourist destination with Northern Europeans and is ideally situated just 19 km, approximately 10 minutes by car, west of Málaga International Airport. It has a population of 65,965 inhabitants. Benalmadena is one of the more popular tourist destinations on the Costa del Sol and is split into 3 main areas. These are the traditional and original settlement of Benalmádena, Benalmadena Pueblo and the cosmopolitan town of Arroyo de la Miel. Benalmádena Pueblo is situated in the foothills of the mountains and about 5 km from the coast. Most areas of this village offer breathtaking views of the Mediterranean sea from Fuengirola to Malaga.
As well as two golf courses, this area has an abundance of attractions encouraging tourism on a year round basis. Along this busy stretch of coastline there are over 20 km of golden sandy beaches and the award-winning Puerto Marina, which is known for its buzzing nightlife and sea life Marina. As well as its busy bars and restaurants, the Marina is home to some lovely yachts and motorboats, and it’s here where you can take a catamaran or fishing trip from one of the local tour operators. Along this beautiful and very compact coastline there are many busy tourist hotels and of course the famous Casino by the water’s edge in Torrequebrada.
Benalmádena Costa has a numerous and varied selection of hotels that align the beach front the main road and side streets of this popular tourist destination. The main area of Benalmádena Costa lies between the award-winning marina and the area of Torrequebrada which is home to Benalmádena’s only casino. Within this area there are plenty of restaurants, bars, clubs and entertainment venues that cater for many nationalities. Most of these establishments are situated on the main road, the marina and Plaza Solymar, previously known as 24hr square offering a very lively and late nightlife during the summer months.
The marina is not only a nightspot but a great place to shop and dine, and it is also a very popular residential spot for the wealthier. The marina offers varied international restaurants and as well boat trips to sight see, go fishing, dolphin watching and getting a water taxi to either Malaga or Fuengirola taking in the beautiful coastline of the Costa del Sol. All the seasonal sea sports are on offer and other places of interest are the Sealife Centre and aquarium, Selwo Marina and Paloma Park. It is also close to 15 golf courses that are less than 20 km away.
